Pakistan’s textile sector needs reliable thermal energy for washing, dyeing, drying and finishing. Biomass pellets can be part of that energy mix, particularly where suitable residues are available and combustion equipment is designed or adapted for the fuel.
Process heat is the real conversation
The useful comparison is not a headline price. It is the delivered cost of useful heat after moisture, calorific value, boiler efficiency, ash handling, labour, storage and downtime are included.
Start with the boiler, not the pellet brochure
Fuel-feeding design, grate type, combustion control, residence time and emissions equipment determine what a plant can use safely. A pellet that performs in one installation may cause deposits or unstable combustion in another.
Before changing fuel, a mill should document its steam or heat demand, obtain representative analysis, review the system with qualified engineers and run a controlled trial. Operators need training because the visual and operational cues differ from oil or gas.
Consistency is the commercial challenge
Textile operations cannot depend on occasional batches. Producers must control feedstock, moisture, fines and ash while arranging storage across crop seasons. Buyers should define sampling and rejection rules in the contract.
The best partnerships are transparent. Producers learn from plant performance; mills share operational data; and both sides improve the specification. That is how a new fuel becomes infrastructure rather than a one-time experiment.
A transition with safeguards
Biomass should not be marketed as automatically carbon neutral. Farming, processing and transport all have impacts, while sourcing choices determine whether the climate case is credible. Residue-based supply, traceability and efficient local logistics strengthen the case.
For Pakistan, the wider opportunity is strategic: keep more energy spending in local supply chains, create rural work and reduce open residue burning where it occurs. Those benefits should be measured rather than assumed.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently asked
Can an existing textile boiler burn pellets?
Some can after engineering review or modification; others require purpose-built combustion equipment. Fuel trials and safety review are necessary.
What is the main purchasing risk?
Inconsistent feedstock and quality. Contracts should define laboratory parameters, sampling, delivery and remedies for off-specification fuel.
